Gua Musang, Kelantan

One of the main towns in Kelanta, Gua Musang which means ‘Civet Caves’ is very popular for its scenic limestone caves which can be seen as one approaches the town.

It is naturally a railway town and is part of the Jungle Railway service in the country that links Kota Bharu to Gemas in Johor. As the names suggests, one would like the hilly slopes of caves and hills around here. The town is pretty small with a population of around 100,000 people.

Pasir Mas, Kelantan

Pasir Mas which means ‘Golden Sands’ is one of the major towns in Kelantan. It is the main gateway that borders into Thailand through Sungai Golok if one wants to head up north through the east coast of Malaysia.

With a recorded population of around 200,000 people, it can be reached by rail and road. The KTM’s Intercity service comes here through the Rantau Panjang line while there are daily services for express buses from Johor Bharu as well as to Kuala Lumpur.

Kota Bharu is the state capital of east coast state Kelantan. The Royal City of Kelantan means ‘New City’ and has a population of more than 600,000 people.

It is the tenth largest city in Malaysia and is considered the most populous town in the east coast of the Peninsular. One can reach the city through Wakaf Bharu Terminal Station by train while flying in would be through Pengkalan Chepa’s Sultan Ismail Petra Airport. Despite its ‘sleepiness’ as many perceived, Kota Bharu has many things to see if you are interested in the cultural and traditional lifestyle of the locals.

Kelantan is located at the eastern most region of Peninsular Malaysia. Known officially as

Kelantan Darul Naim, it is widely regarded as one of the most religious states in the country as it

is governed by the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS).

Known for its traditional and cultural attractions, it is also the border state to Thailand apart from Perlis and Kedah. It is home to the

oldest archaeological discoveries in the country with its economy widely contributed through the

agricultural sector of rice, tobacco, rubber as well as fishing. Despite being an Islamic based

state, other faiths are practiced freely where one can also visit the Wat Photivihan in Tumpat

with the longest statue of a sleeping Buddha in Southeast Asia.

Malaysia comprises of 15 states. The states are Pahang, Perak, Johor, Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Sabah, Sarawak, labuan, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, Putrajaya and Terengganu.

Sabah and Sarawak are located in the East side of the country which are adjacent to our neighbour country, Indonesia, namely Kalimantan.

Johor is located in the south of West Malaysia and is one of the biggest states in Malaysia while Perlis is the smallest state located at the north of West Malaysia.

Sarawak is the biggest state, located at the East Malaysia.
